Introduction

The Officer Development School (ODS) is a Regimental level School operated as part of S7 - Training. The Officer development school conducts on-demand courses to train current Cavalry Soldiers the fundamentals of leadership, administration and tactical orders production. The School tests Soldiers via competitive process to produce Army Officers capable of commanding at the Platoon level.

The School only conducts the Officer Development School course.

Mission and Vision

The Mission of the Officer Development School is listed as: The 7th Cavalry Regiment Officer Development School will train and mentor the next generation of Army Officers, with an emphasis on mission command, leadership and ethical values. The Officer Development School will produce leaders capable of timely and accurate decision making, performance under stress, and in degraded conditions.

The Vision of the School is listed as: The Officer Development School will maintain global Situational Awareness, across the Army and within the Regiment. The School will also maintain a local focus, imparting the skills and art of leadership onto new Soldiers. The School will seek to instruct students on the best practices and developments in military leadership, and incorporate critical thinking and discussion at all steps. The School will incorporate the military ethos into all new Officers, imparting that they are the last step towards lethal effects being brought to bear upon the enemies of the Regiment.

Officer Development School (ODS)

The Officer Development School Course is distinct from other courses, as it requires significant pre-requisites. Students must be a Specialist, complete NCOA, and the Server Administration Course. Aside from these requirements, students must also receive a letter of recommendation from their Sub-Unit or equivalent commander. The Officer Development School is divided into three days, with each day taking one hour. Students will learn about the roles of junior Officers, how to formulate orders products, and how to manage and administer subordinates.

Instructor Qualification Policy

Due to the specialized nature of the Officer Development School, new instructors must meet specific requirements.

  • Must be a current Officer serving as a Platoon Leader or higher position, or
  • Must be a current Non-Commissioned Officer serving as a Platoon Sergeant or higher position
