ELOA Abuse Guidelines

Historically period of extended leave of absence have been a part of the 7th Cavalry, and we have no intent to change that. We have always expected that our members would excise good judgement when determining the need for ELOA, and return when the situation permitted.

Over the course of the summer, it has become evident that some parties have taken what can only be described as advantage of the ELOA opportunities with the unit. While we will always excersise flexibility when determining when ELOA abuse has occured, I find it prudent to provide general guidance on this matter.

There are two black and white situations, which we consider to be ELOA abuse, and will be immediately refered to adminitrative processing;

  1. Failure to return from ELOA after 45 days (without authorized extention) * not applicable to military deployment ELOA
  2. Being observed playing under another units tags while on ELOA

We have always expected that our members will play games, even while on ELOA. However it is understood that the reason for an ELOA request is a limitation on your time / change in your schedule, which prevents you from maintaing the minimum requirements of the unit ( which for most is still 1 roll call post, and 1 section practice a week ). Over the summer period, there have been multiple instances of individuals who while on ELOA, have accrued over 50-60 hours of gametime a week.

The ELOA status in the 7th Cavalry Regiment was never intended for these situations. I can appreciate that gaming needs change, and each of the members of the Command Team have dabbled at one point or another in the next hot thing ( or old thing at times). However it is not acceptable use of the ELOA policy, to take a sabatical from the Cav for an extend period, and then rack up these levels of gameplay outside of the cav ( be it MMO, non supported FPS, or other ). It is perfectly fine to discover on ELOA that you do have some free time, and get in game for a few hours here and there, but I firmly believe that anyone can agree if your putting in a part time or full time employments' worth of gametime, you can make section practice that week.

In the future, when our routine ELOA checks in the Security Operations Group, detect this type of behaviour, we will contact you in order to assess your situation. In cases of abuse of our ELOA policies, we may elect to take adminstrative and disciplinary action.

It is important to stress, that the overwhelming majority of our membership has never had any issue with proper use of the extended leave of abscene solutions in the community. This posting does not constituent a shift in our handling of these matters, and is made only to ensure that the guidance has been given clearly regarding the matter.

For the Command,
