Mission

CVW-12’s mission is to provide 3rd Battalion with carrier based strike fighters, carrier and land based fixed wing attack, support, and logistics aircraft. As well as a compliment of rotary and support units performing operational command, recovery, reconnaissance, and logistic duties.

Traditions and History

Traditions

CVW-12 is the first company in the 7th Cavalry Gaming Regiment comprised of Navy personnel. As such, the majority of operations and training are conducted on a carrier that the CAG (Combat Air Wing) has been assigned to. The assigned carrier can change based on the units deployment location. Members of CVW-12 upon receiving their “wings” will be given a call sign that has been voted on by current winged aviators, and approved by the unit commander. The call sign tradition is celebrated by aviation communities across all military branches, and is used as a way to build the esprit de corps between new and old aviators of a unit.

“Quite often, a call sign will be based on a retelling of a mistake a young pilot made, with the rule being that the story has to be at least 10% true.” - Air Force Lt. Col. Keith Anderson

History

CVW-12 was stood up on April 1st 2024 after the successful creation of 3-7. Prior to the creation of 3rd Battalion, CVW-12 was known as 1/A/ACD, and was a platoon in Alpha Company ACD. Alpha Company ACD was stood up on May 29, 2022 for the DCS group.
