Delegation of Authority Through Billeting in the Chain of Command
- Squad leaders (SLs) and Assistant Squad Leaders (ASLs) are to be assigned by company, with the option to delegate to the platoon staff.
- Platoon Sergeants are to be assigned by the Company First Sergeant. Commanding Officer may veto at their own discretion.
- Platoon leaders are to be assigned by the Chief of Staff through ODS process.
- First Sergeants are to be assigned by Sergeant major - Battalion Commanding Officer may veto at own discretion.
- Company Commanding Officer’s and Executive Officers are to be assigned by Battalion Commanding Officer.
- Sergeant Major’s (SGM) are to be assigned by Command Sergeant Major (CSM). Chief of Staff may veto at their discretion.
- Battalion Commanding Officer’s and Executive Officers are to be assigned by Chief of Staff.
Clarification on Vetoes
While the Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO) core is responsible for assigning replacements for the lower enlisted, the officer core is still entrusted with maintaining the overall health of the unit they are assigned to. Therefore, they have an interest in ensuring the selection of quality NCOs and, as such: have the ability to veto any decision made by an NCO in their chain of command.
Higher rungs of the COC have the inherent right to overrule, veto, or override decisions made by their subordinates. For example, the Battalion Sergeant Major can select a Platoon Sergeant replacement over the objection of a First Sergeant if deemed necessary. Additionally, the Battalion Sergeant Major cannot be vetoed by the Company Commander, only an officer of equal command level or higher may do so.
Note on Transfers
Leadership seeking transfer to an equivalent command level must register their intent to transfer with the assigning authority for that position prior to it being filled. If the position is open, and has not already been offered to another member prior to the transfer request's communication, the transferring leader has priority if otherwise qualified and in good standing.
