S3 – Operations
Mission
The S3 department is responsible for Training and Operations. Regimental S3 is overseen by a HHQ department, and is bifurcated into their respective Battalions, and then between their two primary functions. Within each Battalion is a Training and Battlestaff (Operations) department. It is important that S3 interface with other members of Battalion staff, as each staff member is responsible for a specific area of operations that will impact any plans S3 makes.
Composition
S3 Battlestaff
The S3 Battlestaff is responsible for planning and developing Battalion operations. They write the standard operational procedures (SOP) for how Operations are to be conducted. They also generate the orders for specific combat actions. Finally, S3 evaluates performance in the form of After Action Reports. S3 formulates specific plans for Operations given the characteristics of the mission and the battalion's Area of Operation. For example, if the Battalion Commanding Officer directs S3 to develop a mission plan for capturing an insurgent leader, S3 will determine which subordinate units should be tasked with the mission, such as an infantry platoon. Finally S3 will generate the written order (OPORD) which will detail the situation, the nature of the mission, the target and the time line for a given Operation. In addition, S3 Battlestaff is responsible for identifying, testing, and implementing any mods to be used by their respective Battalion.
S3 Training and Doctrine Command ("TRADOC")
Within its training responsibilities, S3 is responsible for developing and administering the Schools, Courses, and Standards that both individuals and units should be able to perform relative to their primary Military Occupational Specialty (MOS). When they learn from their respective Battalion Commanding Officer what the unit standards are, S3 Training develops a training plan, determines which resources are necessary to complete the training programs, and conducts training programs.
