Purpose

This Standard Operating Procedure establishes conduct and communication requirements for all personnel attending A/ACD operational briefings. Due to the complexity of DCS operations and the number of personnel, aircraft, and mission elements involved, briefings must remain organized, concise, and free from unnecessary interruptions.

Scope

This SOP applies to all A/ACD personnel and attached participants attending an official operation briefing, regardless of rank, billet, or assigned role.

General Conduct

All personnel shall give their full attention to the briefing officer and comply with the following requirements:

Briefing Discipline

Personnel shall not interrupt or speak over the briefing officer.

  • Questions and comments shall be held until the briefing officer calls for them unless a participant is addressed directly.
  • Information currently being presented shall not be repeated or restated unnecessarily.
  • Verbal acknowledgment or affirmation of orders is not required unless specifically requested.

Microphone Control

Personnel shall remain muted when not speaking.

  • Background noise, open microphones, and accidental transmissions shall be minimized.
  • Voice activation shall not be used if it creates repeated background noise or interruptions.

Questions and Corrections

Questions shall be written in full in the briefing-room text channel.

  • After posting a question, personnel shall use the designated “Hand Raise” reaction or emoji to request recognition.
  • Personnel shall wait to be called upon before speaking.
  • Errors, conflicts, or significant concerns regarding the brief shall be identified in text chat and addressed by the briefing officer at the earliest appropriate opportunity.
  • Only Flight Leads are authorized to direct message the briefing officer after conclusion of any brief.

Immediate interruption is authorized only when necessary to prevent a serious safety, technical, or significant/critical mission-planning error.

Side Conversations

  • Side conversations are prohibited in voice chat while the briefing is in progress.
  • Text-chat activity shall be limited to information directly relevant to the operation.
  • Unrelated discussion, jokes, and unnecessary commentary shall be reserved until the briefing has concluded.

Required Attention

All personnel are responsible for understanding and retaining information concerning:

  • Aircraft, flight, and role assignments.
  • Mission objectives and priorities.
  • Communications plans, frequencies, and channels.
  • Rules of engagement and special instructions.
  • Departure, execution, and recovery timelines.
  • Coordination requirements.
  • Personnel who miss or disregard information presented during the brief remain responsible for complying with all issued instructions.

Responsibilities of the briefing staff.

The briefing officer shall:

  • Maintain control of the briefing.
  • Present mission information clearly and in a logical order.
  • Address submitted questions at an appropriate point or during the designated question period.
  • Correct inaccurate or conflicting information before mission execution.
  • Identify when the briefing is complete and release personnel to their assigned channels or stations.
  • Regardless of attendance, brief all airframes.

Read aloud the following message prior to conducting the mission brief:

Before we begin, all personnel are to remain muted and refrain from interrupting or speaking over the briefer. Post questions in full in the briefing-room chat, use the hand-raise emoji, and wait to be called upon. Side conversations and unrelated chat are prohibited. Pay close attention to all assignments, objectives, communications, and timing. Failure to follow these requirements may result in removal from the briefing or operation.

Accountability

Failure to comply may result in removal from the briefing. Repeated or disruptive violations may result in removal from the operation and referral to the individual’s Chain of Command for further action.
